It's true, I have. I quit my job - to pursue my career! (ha ha, sorry to my wedding couples if I had you a wee bit worried there!)
I have finally quit my day job to give my business 100% of my attention and I am beyond excited (and scared, and nervous) but mostly EXCITED!
I've been involved in Floristry for over 10 years now. It started when I worked in banking, I was 21 and hadn't a clue what I wanted to do with my life. I was doing well in my job, hitting targets, being put forward for studies with a view to promotion but I just knew something wasn't right. I felt like I was held hostage 9-5 Mon-Fri, like my wings were clipped, I knew it wasn't for me.
I have a mix of strengths (and plenty of weaknesses!) so I had a think about these when trying to choose a new path. I love being hands on creative, in anything really, but I'm also really organised, have a good business head, love planning, accompanied by a passion to be my own boss and manage my own time. After gathering some thoughts around this I started looking into careers that could fit this bill. I've always loved working with flowers in various forms including garden flowers and dug a bit deeper (pun intended) into Floristry, and here we are.
I left my job in the bank (I guess that in itself was a scary decision at the time too!) to take up a part time trainee Florist vacancy in a traditional shop as well as attending college. I worked between a few shops to gain as much experience as possible as some shops styles are really different, some do more weddings etc. After a few years I was involved in the day to day management of the last shop I was in as well as having lots of practical experience under my belt. Yay! Now, this is the part where life got in the way, had it not I would have charged on and set up on my own at that point but alas I had to return to banking - and as they say, everything happens for a reason.
I never left working with flowers though, doing Weddings for friends, family and friends of friends and loving it. Still wishing to have my own business. Fast forward to 2014 and my baby, The Floral Design Boutique, was born!
For the last two years I have been working full time and building my business from the ground up. It's been an incredibly busy and challenging time and I have loved every minute. I'm learning every day - I'm the Owner, the Florist, the Accountant, the PR chick, Marketing - yip that's me, floor sweeper upper and tea maker - to name but a few. The time has now come where I am working two very challenging, very time consuming jobs, one's got to go so, the day job it is. Wooo hoo!
I can now concentrate on my Weddings for the year ahead, Events, Corporate contracts as well as making some expansions... watch this space! It's so exciting!
And I couldn't do it without you, yes, you who has gone to my FB page, website, Instagram or maybe Twitter and who is reading this right now - Thank you.
I really want to thank all of my customers who have booked with us so far! You're not just buying a product or service you're helping my dream come true :) Going forward you will also be contributing to my three square meals per day too lol.
I also want to thank my Husband Sean for all of those late nights packing up the car and early morning delivery/set ups as well as putting up with me being glued to my laptop most nights working on quotes etc. My two trusted business advisers and biggest fans, my sister Susan and sister-in-law Sally-Ann, who regularly let me hijack our group chats with me testing out business ideas as well as the rest of my family and friends, couldn't do it without you all!
